Our History

On the southwest side of the ancient Wichita Mountains and securely located next to the frontier outpost, Fort Sill, a city was born. The Lawton Land Lottery had literally drawn people in from all over the country. It was August 12, 1901, that nineteen of those souls, who must have been people of great faith, organized themselves and filed a charter for the First Baptist Church of Lawton.

These people met in a tent for their first worship service and would meet in various other places, including a tabernacle on the courthouse square, before they would establish their permanent home on the corner of Fifth and B Ave. Today on that same corner the large building complex called First Baptist Church, now covering more than an entire city block, bears silent testimony that a century has passed and the Church still stands, worshipping God, following Christ, and serving people.

First Baptist Church has stood strong across a century, constantly being energized by it's mission to the world. New churches have been born, young soldiers, among others, have been reached for Christ and then sent out to various places in the earth, and First Baptist Church has truly touched the world.

Our Pastors

Our current Pastor is Mike Keahbone.

Mike grew up in Elgin, Oklahoma.  His father was a full-blood Cherokee and his mother was Comanche and Kiowa.  Though he comes from a proud Native heritage, his family was ravaged by alcohol and drug addiction.  As a “teenage mom”, Mike’s mother was in and out of his life and would eventually pass away at the age of 40 due to an alcohol related illness.  Mike’s father was completely absent from his life.

Through all of the turmoil, pain and abandonment, there was hope.  God put people in Mike’s life that would love him unconditionally and model the love of Jesus Christ for him.  It was that love and example that would lead him to give his life to the Lord on November 1, 1990 at Cameron University in Lawton, OK.  It became clear to Mike that God had been with him through the storms of his life and that each and every circumstance was instrumental in shaping God’s plan for him.  Mike has been called to preach the love, hope and comfort that can only come through the gospel of Jesus Christ.  Mike seeks to honor God and teach Scripture to all people.  He combines deep and practical teaching of Scripture with relevant humor, stories, and principles for life change.  God has given him a clear, passionate vision to fulfill the calling of Colossians 1:28, to present everyone perfect in Christ.

He married his wife, Jennifer in 2002 and they have three children, daughter Hannah (13), son Mikah (11) and daughter Sarah Grace (8).  Mike completed his B.S. in Management and Ethics at Mid-America Christian University OKC, OK and will complete his M.A. in Leadership from Mid-America this year.  Mike’s call into ministry includes youth ministry from 1998–2010, Evangelist/Speaker from 2010–2012,  Associate Pastor of Families from 2012–2014 and Senior Pastor at Cherokee Hills Baptist Church in Oklahoma City, OK from 2014 – 2020.

Mike enjoys spending time with his family and participating in his children’s activities, traveling and making memories.  He LOVES to golf!!!  He loves reading leadership books and debating; a love that stemmed from being on the collegiate speech and debate team in college.  He also loves some quiet time in a hammock.

Patrick and Laura felt the Lord's call back to Georgia and he now serves as the Senior Pastor at Tabernacle Baptist Church in Cartersville, GA.

Shane grew up in Burns Flat, OK. He earned his bachelor's degree from Oklahoma Baptist University and Master of Divinity from the New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. Dr. Gary W. Cook and his wife Linda began their ministry with First Baptist church in 1992. He came from ten years of service with the Baptist Sunday School Board where he was Vice president, Office of Church Programs and Services. Dr. Cook is a native to Ardmore, Oklahoma.
